Phonics Program: Alphabet Awareness, Fun Fundamentals
The Phonics Program is a residency that is an innovative approach to teaching reading readiness. Using songs, dances, sign language and visuals. The program, created by Cindy Hanna, uses multiple stimuli to teach phonemes to pre-kindergarten through first grade students. Each letter of the alphabet has a dance, song and sign, establish and reinforce the connection of the letter to its corresponding sounds. By acknowledging that all students do not learn in the same way, or at the same rate, the Phonics Program while engaging all students addresses the needs of those students who struggle with the traditional approach to reading skills. Students have the opportunity to work with a teaching artist specialized in music and movement for eight sessions. The Residency culminates in a celebratory performance by all participating students.
