Connections to the Wizard of Oz and the Wiz
“Connections to the Wizard of Oz and the Wiz” - A three part, interactive workshop for grades 3, 4, 5. New York State grade appropriate standards apply for Music.
Session One takes students through New York State’s connections to one of America’s most famous stories, “The Wizard of Oz” with Buffalo’s own Harold Arlen, Frank Baum, and the characters of the classic 1939 movie. With a brief overview of the political and social impact of the original novel, students will explore the musical elements in the theme song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and compare the original to updated versions.
Session Two goes into greater depth of the five main characters personality traits and includes a guided writing exercise for students to reflect on ways they currently demonstrate the qualities of courage, intelligence, compassion and gratitude. Students will discuss their writings, allowing for empathetic exchanges.
Session Three traces the impact of this masterpiece on other cultural phenoms including the 1978 film “The Wiz” featuring an all African-American cast including Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. Students will compare scenes and characters of the original Wizard with the Wiz, and end with an overview of Michael Jackson’s Motown roots and hip hop influence.
