Dylaina Young

Dylaina Young is a musician and dancer who was born and raised in Allegany, New York. Her dance experience includes: ballet, modern, improvisational African, and Middle Eastern. She has choreographed and performed at Dance Arts in Olean, NY, and at Bard College where she obtained her BS in Music and Dance. She currently teaches and performs Middle Eastern bellydancing throughout New York.

Ms. Young writes original music compositions in classical, folk, rock, and experimental genres. Her original compositions have been played by the Colorado String Quartet and the DaCapo Chamber Musicians.

Programs

From Speech to Dance add to wish list

Explore the relationship between vocal and physical self-expression. Participants begin by acting out a word or phrase, noting their body' s reaction. The artist discusses dance phrasing and styles, inspiring the students to create their own improvisational dance based on their original movements. Through dance, students learn the interaction between individuality and self-expression.

Intro to Middle Eastern Dance- The Art of Bellydancing add to wish list

A supportive, tasteful workshop designed to build self-esteem, promote a healthy, active lifestyle, and encourage positive body images. While learning basic belly dance movements, students also discover Middle Eastern culture, from daily life to favorite dances.

Songwriting Residency add to wish list

Provide older students with insight into professional songwriting. Possible topics include notation, a survey of instruments and writing for them, a brief musical history, and an overview of different genres. Music theory, from simple rhythms to chords and scales, can also be discussed. This residency is highly adaptable to the focus of the students involved.
