Music For a New Century:
Composing with Computers
In these workshops students are introduced to the technological advances in the art of music composition. Starting with a MIDI system which combines computers with synthesizers, Bart & Kevin provide students with an experience in the hands-on creation of a MIDI arrangement. Students are also shown the latest wave looping software for creating contemporary musical compositions. Specifics covered include tone generators, polyphony, multi-timbral sequencing and MIDI controllers. This is an excellent supplement to the technology unit of the Music in our Lives Curriculum! Let’s Listen in Color-ELA
In these very interactive workshops students are guided in how to focus their hearing to identify the elements of a live performance. Bart & Kevin teach students to listen beyond the obvious (black & white) and to hear more of the color in music and in their environment. This is a unique approach to enhance listening skills.
Grades: 3-12 |

The Benched Players
Theater Improvisation
The Benched Players awaken and engage creative and critically-thinking minds through the medium of theatrical improvisation. In a series of participatory classroom workshops, students explore their perspectives, opinions, beliefs, and feelings about the issues they face everyday. A brief needs assessment with participating teachers and students helps determine the topics that are most relevant. The Benched Players incorporate these topics into the workshops. Topics vary by age and grade level. Kindergarteners through 3rd graders learn about self-awareness and awareness of others. Fourth through 6th graders may address peer pressure and the influence of media, while middle and high school students might deal with peer pressure, drug and alcohol abuse, self-expression and confidence, as well as responsibility. The Benched Players use elements of theater and improvisation to encourage critical thinking, empathy, situational analysis, emotional awareness and control, media literacy and more. Teaching artist and performer Melissa Kate Miller leads the workshops. The program can be presented as two back to back workshops (90 minutes) or a residency consisting of 5-9 45-minute classroom workshop sessions.

Elizabeth Clark Dance Ensemble
Come Fly with Me!
The students begin in their "dance" or "movement" spots with personal space around each student. The first image of FLIGHT is introduced from the Firefly Samba in a simple movement phase that all students actively do. Then, the first dialogue is introduced: What kinds of words would you think of to describe the movement? (All answers are considered.) This kind of process is then used for the Dandelion Seed in the Gentle Wind and so on through the program. The dynamic music for Zoom helps define spatial directions for students. It also builds self-control during group movements. A planning session with the artist and classroom teacher is required if more than one workshop will be held. The residency can be up to twelve workshops with each class..
