different musical styles and are introduced to the concept of improvisation.

Blues To Bluegrass
Students go on an uniquely American musical journey to explore
these two musical styles born on our own soil. The Blues are traced
from their roots in slavery with the field hollers of workers in
the Mississippi Delta up the Mississippi River to Memphis, St.
Louis, and Chicago. Students learn about the stylistic changes
that occurred as people and music traveled from rural to urban
areas, and learn about the instruments and people of Bluegrass,
originating with the music of Bill Monroe and other stringman in
the hills of Kentucky. The influence of these two uniquely American
styles on the music and culture of today is explored. A study of
Blues to Bluegrass is a study of American culture of the past 100
years.

Synergy
Music + Poetry = SYNERGY
The word synergy means a result that is more than the sum of its
parts, and the group, SYNERGY, demonstrates this in every way.
Consisting of a string quartet of musicians of some of Western
New York's finest performers and distinguished retired BPO flutist,
Laurence Trott, (YA-WNY's first artist), SYNERGY was formed to
bring audiences the finest of the world's chamber music. By combining
poetry with the music, SYNERGY's performances communicate a wide
range of thought and emotion. The poems are drawn from diverse
cultures and time periods. Original student poetry can also be
included. SYNERGY's programs, delivering so much more than the
sum of its parts, are the very definition of synergy.

But each recording is the work of professionals who profit from revenues generated when their songs are played. This workshop is designed to educate students and teachers about the music industry, songwriting, and the laws related to publishing and marketing music. Learning how to protect your music and why it's important to, is useful for students interested in careers in music, law, or the entertainment industry. For this workshop, students create a song and learn how and why the copyright is divided between contributors. Can be one or multiple workshops.
