The McClure Artist Guild
Master Teaching Artists Glenn McClure (composer, musician, and arts integration consultant), Ted Canning (percussionist specializing in steel drumming), Ian Gendreau (percussionist specializing in West African drumming), Geoffrey Fitzhugh Perry (multi-instrumentalist specializing in jazz violin) and members of the Panloco Steel Band present over 1,000 concerts, workshops and residencies each year. The group has extensive experience in alternative education and special education settings. Guild members offer teachers an opportunity to learn how to use the arts in their daily lessons through support materials. In addition to their arts integration work, Guild members' performance and composing work stretches from Eastern Europe and Mexico to Carnegie Hall.
Talking Drums
This program explores all the ways in which rhythms communicate in several
cultures around the world. Three Guild members share the musical/linguistic
world of Ghana with traditional songs and instruments as they sing the
songs and play the instruments on stage. Starting with the rich sounds
of West African drums, the artists explore their use in sending messages
across long distances and then follow the interaction of these drums
with other musical traditions in the New World.

Steel Drum Paradise
Follow the creation of the steel drum from its beginnings as a discarded oil barrel to a high-tech musical instrument. Through the story of the Trinidadian steel drum, two Guild artists demonstrate how music grows and changes as it flows between different cultures. Learn how peoples of African and Caribbean cultures celebrate their heritage through music, following their history from hand drumming, through "Tamboo-Bamboo" bands, and into the modern steel band. Students will hear old and new sounds on congas, claves, brake drums, guiros - and even trash cans, and the artists will create a steel drum band with your students on stage!

The Njozi Poets/Poetic Voices
Njozi Poets/Poetic Voices are spoken word collectives that use a mix
of ensemble poems along with compelling solo performances. The Njozi
Poets also offer unique combinations of dance, song and poetry. The group's
acappella performances blend classic spoken word works with original
poems styled with a hip-hop flavor ("Slam Poetry"). The political
and social nature of their work reflects street realities and global
problems. A question and answer session follows the performances, which
allows the students to gain first hand knowledge of this dynamic group.
