Young Audiences of Western New York

Babik

BabikBABIK (Bah-Beek) is Buffalo's only Gypsy Swing band-a quartet that plays the music of Jazz legends Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelly, Brazilian and Latin sounds, as well as original compositions.  These four skilled musicians improvise passionately and create music that balances refined musicianship with the raw energy of a Gypsy campfire.  The Buffalo News calls Babik "one of the hottest bands in Buffalo"  and they have also won "Best Jazz Band" from Artvoice's Readers Choice Awards for three years running.  In 2008 they performed a pops concert with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.  The music of Babik is joyful and has deep roots in the gypsy tradition-moving audiences to dance and celebrate life!

A Journey Through Gypsy Jazz

Take a musical ride through Europe, America and beyond!  In this fun and lively concert, Babik will introduce students to the music of Gypsy Guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grapelly.  The very popular music of "Swing de Paris" kept people's spirits high during World War II, on both the battlefield and the homefront.  Django began performing professionally at the age of twelve, but his career was nearly ruined when his left hand was severely burned in a fire.  Despite this setback, Django overcame this handicap and actually used it to his advantage and went on to become one of the greatest Jazz guitarists of all time...using only his thumb and two fingers!  Django also survived the Nazi persecution of Gypsies during the Holocaust--his music literally saved his life on a number of occasions.  Hearing his music and life story is sure to inspire students to never give up in the face of hard times.  Through music, singing and storytelling Babik's performance will teach students about World War II, Gypsy Culture, Jazz and Improvisation--the only thing that's missing will be the campfire! (Programs for High School students studying World War II will include more WWII history and how Django survived Nazi persecution of the Gypsy people.)

Journey With Music and the Imagination

This interactive program is based on a short work for cello and piano, written by Lukas Foss.  With the piece as a focal point, the performers describe the creation process of each of the art forms - music and writing- and discuss how the use of language can identify a feeling or idea created by a musical impulse.  The artists then demonstrate the particular character and elements of the Foss piece and, with the use of specific images and sounds, guide the students to use their imaginations to create their own “sound story.”  The program culminates in the performance of “Journey,” a work written and told by author and storyteller Raya Then, to the live music of the cello/piano duo.

Artists: Nancy Baun, Raya Then, Susan Schuman
Fee: single $340; back-to-back $680
Grades: K-6
Limit: 60 students per performance
